Well, the Primary bed is ready for Planting tomorrow, weather willing. The 2ndary bed will be for those things that require lower Soil Temps for Germination that presently manifest in our Soil. While 80F may not seem that Cool, my house temps are low enough to allow those to Germinate. I Feel a little "dirty" in that a couple of crops are Hybrids instead of Heirlooms though;>. The reasons were quite simple. There are two of us and it's silly to Grow something that's so large that some would be wasted. While I like Tsukemono, Chuck doesn't(he only likes the Bread&Butter-type Pickles and only pickled cukes...) so those huge Asian Cabbages and Mustards are too wasteful. If I'm going to Grow Green COmpost, let it be Clover or WInter Rye!
Trying a few variations on old favs this yr. A WHite Beet and a Yellow Turnip in addition to the regulars. The Shimonita Negi in addition to the Leeks. Romanesco and ASian Broccolis instead of the usual suspects.
I'm also trying a new way of growing thge Leeks, Negi and Artichokes. Removing the bottoms of large nursery pots and burying them low enough that the mower won't hit them. Fill with 50/50 Compost and garden soil. It'll keep down weeds and in the case of the onions, you don't fill them all the way up and then you can slowly refill, blanching the stems nicely.
Should take me a couple of weeks to get the 2ndary ready....
Troth,
Pat
