Apr. 22nd, 2013 12:07 pmThe only "positive" thing about this Sciatica-BS is that I've got time to Meditiate;>.....
A couple months ago I had one of those IMPULSES, which was to study Buddhism. Now, luckly I'm older now because if this had happened 20 yrs ago(or more) I'd have taken it as "Marching Orders from the Universe".
It HAS been Interesting, mainly because a lot of the things I Beleived were incorrect...starting with the "Life is SUffering" BS. AS a Nordic Pagan I should know better than to accept 18-19th century English translations;>! The actual term used "Dukkha" comes closer to what modern Americans call "Stress". And if you don't Beleive that Attachments to Stuff causes stress(Getting, Keeping, Maintaining, Upgrading, etc Physical and Emotional "Stuff"), I have a plethora of bridges for you;>.....
I didn't know that there were two "schools" that pretty much follow the Faith vs Works pattern. The one form that, if I wasn't a Heathen I could follow is Zen, which sort of combines the two, shaped by Daoist Views. So, I've been using this "down time" to Meditate using mostly Zen Practices....needless to say I'm not Sitting Zazen;>!
It's been Interesting in that unlike all the other Meditation systems I've been taught and Practiced since the 70's one isn't DOING. Many of the other Indian-based systems say they are as well but when you are doing so much focusing, Chanting, Mudras, etc....you ARE definitely DOING something.
It's only been a couple of weeks since I started(I started before going to the ER so I DO wonder if a fat guy sitting Zazen may have caused the nerve damage in the 1st place)and I admit to find, esp since I Practice Prone-Zen;> it quite refreshing. Very different experience from the other systems over the decades...
Cheers,
Pat
