2005 was NOT a very good yr, but it did bring some Interesting lessons. Probably the Biggest was that a Negative does not a community make. What I mean by that is that if you are in a group of folks because “they’re not ____”, it’s not Satisfying of Uplifting in the long run. If anything, it makes one MORE Lonely.
One of those was a segment of our local Pagan community. Now, these folks are Good folks…PERIOD. They are, however, not any form of Heathen. Their Verold is Alien, as mine is to them. Understanding never comes. The best is Tolerance and that’s not enough any more…
The other was segments of the Heathen community. While I’m Folkish, I’m also Gay AND Disabled. I’d be treated better in the Universalist Heathen community but I Deeply Believe that Tribal Ways ARE just that. I can’t walk into a Shinto temple and declare myself so, even if I Know the Rites and Words. I Feel the same for Heathenism. Not that there are hordes of Koreans or Egyptians declaring themselves Asa-Tru.
Oddly enough, I AM of the “Walk It Off” school of Health Problems and make it a point to live my Life minimizing it’s impact as much as possible. What DOES really upset me is that when I do(and always making it less than…) I get the “stop Whining”. I'd like to see how well some of these folks do in my boots. I Know I have a high Pain tolerance. Don't Know to many other folks able to hold a hand steady while an MD's scrubbing debris out of 4 bone-deep('casue you could see the bones and ligaments...)lacerations in the same hand, without ANY anethesia. Then think how bad it has to be that 60mg of Morphine daily is enough to take the edge off so you can try to Live so sort of Normal Life...
I had planned to go to a moot this yr that I’d wanted to the last couple but didn’t have trustworthy transport or the income to make alternates…even the bus. This yr we have a better car and even with Medicare-D getting ½ my med coverage canceled(making things even more so…) but after a few comments about how much less committed those of us who can’t/haven’t been I decided not to. The fact that I’ve been living on $233.00 a month AND still being able to do the things I’ve been doing is pretty damned good in my book…
During the Heathen period there were folks that were Solitary due to work or choice and the still would have been considered Heathen. I think that’s the model I should be thinking of and drop the “Church, Kitchen and Children” Paradigm so popular in Heathenry today. The Bearsark Viking Achetype of the “70’s-90’s” was Limiting but so is that of the Holy Farm Family of Today….
