"Modern" vs Historic.....

mdehnersWhat is it with “modern” folk that they think that in all things they know more than anyone else, Past or Present?
I tend to give what I call “The New Heathen Movement” the hairy eyeball. This is probably because I’ve dealt with their predecessors and have found them both wanting and not all that honest….
When I hear phrases like, “We are Inspired by but don't follow the Ways of Ancestral Heathenry”, all I can think of is their Predecessors and, of course, my experiences with them. The best Known of those are: Theosophy, Ceremonial Magick, Wicca and The New Age.
All of these are Spiritual systems created by the “Enlightened” Europeans/Americans of their Times,"Inspired" by the Ways of Others, whether in the Past or Far Away at their Present. Systems that their Founders considered more “Tru” than those they were Inspired from…
Ceremonials Know more than the Ancient Egyptians and Hebrews than the Ancient Egyptians and Modern Jews. Theosophists more than Hinduism do about Hindus. Wiccans about pre-Christian Europe and British Isles. New Agers about everyone else;>…
I’ve heard the same-O same-O from “Modern” Heathens. Historic material that doesn’t fit either their Romanticized or Politicalized World-view is ignored or actively denigrated. Material from other Ways(Past or Present) are used with no comment on whether they ARE Historically Heathen or not. Heathenry is made to be more “Relevant” or “Fun”....
I didn’t “Come Home” until the early “90’s”. That said, I’ve run into folks in both Mid and Cybergarðr quoting Works and/or Practicing Rites that were avowedly new Creations when I ran into my 1st Heathens as Historical material today. Nothing wrong with the Practicing but everything wrong when you are part of a Way that considers Reality an “Inconvenient Truth”;>….
