mdehnersIt's that time of yr again. Like February, August is a big deal for crops in the Florida Panhandle....
By the 1st week you should have ordered all seeds and starts of crops that you don't have, so they will be ready to plant or start Indoors by the end of the month. This Winter(and there are only two Seasons here, Hot and Not Hot;>)I'm trying some rare Heirlooms; a Romanesco Broccoli, a Purple Artichoke and a Negi, the Japanese equivalent to the American Ramp.Both the Negi and the Artichoke have to be tricked. They can't handle our High Summer, so you start them in early Fall, let them grow for a couple of months. The Coldest Time of January and February are long enough to trick it so when Spring comes, it thinks it's been a full yr.
The beds are cleared of that which cooked over High Summer, which is basically everything other than Hot Peppers and Eggplant. They are Manured, Limestoned(Acid Soil here)and "Kibbled". Yes, Kibble. The cheap dollar store dog food is a perfect organic fertilizer. Mix it with fresh weedings or with rabbit/guineapig kibble and it's Garden GOLD. It also seems to prevent some of the "Weirdness" that using Bloodmeal sometimes causes with the Landwights...
