I guess I’m Mellowing in my Dotage. It wasn’t that long ago that someone subbing to a list I’m on in their “Oubliettes & ‘Obgoblins” Persona of the 59th level Barbarian “Moob Squarepants-bane” would trigger a rant…or at least a “Reality Check”. Nope…
I Think it’s because I’ve come to some conclusions about folks who are Attracted to the Alt-Rel’s. They come in Two basic types. The Spiritual and the Power Seeker. The Spiritual Seeker can be of a number of forms. Those who are simply looking for something different, those who are Looking for the Ways of their Ancestors, etc. They are the ones who have Staying Power. Any stable group/kindred/coven/circle/etc is mostly of these folks. The Others may “Cross from the Dark Side”, but usually don’t. Instead are off to the next Shiny thing when their Inflated Egos aren’t “fluffed” to their satisfaction. …
These Weenies are after either Magical or Physical Power. You see more of the Physical types in Heathenry . These folks see the World through their RPG and Fantasy goggles. Both will be disappointed when Reality doesn’t compare to their Fantasies.
The Magic Power-seekers quickly find out that Initiation or a set of Rune-cookies doesn’t grant them god-like Powers and end up hopping form trad to trad. It’s not Unusual for them to return to Christianity and be the center of Attention for their “Journey into Darkness”.
The Physical-seekers actually have those they can Learn from. The problem is that it requires WORK and DICIPLINE, something generally lacking in these wannabees….along with Physical Conditioning. It has always been a source of Amusement to me to run into these Mighty Warriors at a moot or gathering. Most are horribly out of condition and are Lucky if they can throw a knife or axe. Heck, many are lucky to be able to USE an axe;>!
A Warrior requires more than a mouse, a control pad or multi-sided dice. It requires Strength of both Body and Character. A part of Character is Manners. Warrior cultures are the most Mannerly and Cultured for the obvious reason…to decrease excessive Bloodshed! Even in the Modern Americas, those in the “Gun Culture” are more Mannerly. You’re more likely to hear “Sir”, “Mam” and “Please” in the South or Western States. A quick way to tell a “poseur” is by their manners. Those with Arms or Martial training are polite and listen. Those that aren’t usual call for a “Blood Feud” on those that haven’t automatically realized their Wondrousness…

Pat
