Venting vs. Ranting....
Apr. 8th, 2008 07:38 amThere is a difference, though not always apparent to the “listener”. Heck, not always to the “speaker” either;>! Basically, a Vent is literally, to let off steam. There is no subtext about assistance. A Rant, however is a call for both Solidarity and Action.
Now, because it is sometimes hard to tell the difference, folks can be manipulated. List owners/moderators and group leaders can defuse tensions making members think they are Ranting but really are Venting; no changes will come from their effort(s). Also, the speakers themselves can manipulate others to do work they don’t wish to take the risk for. This is one I always fell for. Folks complaining and I go to the PTB’s to get it “fixed”. If things worked out…great. If it blew up in my face, well I was the only “casualty”…
Personally, I think I’m going to do more Venting than Ranting in the Future. I’m a practical guy. I don’t fight losing battles. What is IS. That doesn’t mean I’ll stop “bitching”;>. Just stuff that is too far along to change I’m no longer going to pretend it can be. Besides, I don’t have kids and there is little to no chance for a kindred locally so personally what folks do(or screw up;>) has little to do with my Life in Truth. …
