Reinforcing Stereotypes....for Good
Dec. 4th, 2008 02:53 pmI'm "Handy". That is, most of the places I've Lived as an Adult I've been the one friends turn to if they don't WIsh to deal with their landlord or super. I'm no "Tim Taylor" but I do preetty good.
My Dad WAS "Tim Taylor", sans explosions. His Alzheimer's has prevented him from being able to do the big jobs that he used to, but the more simple he can so....
I've reinforced his Beleif that I'm a "typical Gay" just like on TV. That way he has something to do that makes him Feel that he still COntributes to the Family. He may carp about my "Uselessness" but I Know that these little chores ARE a big deal to him. Like most Gays over 40, we grew up in a world treated much like Blacks did before the Civil Rights period. That gave those of us that Survive a pretty thick skin. I can put up with some mild carping to make sure my Dad Feels Useful as long as it's Possible...
Truth,
Pat
