Book Review....
Jan. 6th, 2009 01:02 pmIf you like Pratchett and DeLint, I suggest Christopher Moore. His books('Bloodsucking Fiends', 'Practical Demonkeeping',The Stupidest Angel')are a lot of fun and his newest, 'A Dirty Job' is his best, IMO.
'ADJ' is the story of Charlie, a 2nd hand store who discovers a 7 foot tall Black man in a pale Green suit stealing a CD from his wife after she gave birth. She dies not long after...
A very creative mythology. You see, he creates a world in which Humans are simply vehicles for Souls to evolve, one in which most don't have them. When a Soul's body is ready to die, it transfers into an item that a Human with the Qualities the SOul is Interested in will be Attracted to. The Death Merchants literally are that, picking up these items and selling them to their Intended Hosts. Appearently, in Moore's Universe, Souls wishing to experience being Gay Impress themselves into Music;Records, CD's, etc...which his wife's Soul intends.....
Lots of fun characters, includingthe Goth cashier that steals the Book of Death from Charlie because she doesn't think he Deserves the Honor, baby Sophie who's pets die daily and can kill with a pointed finger and the word "Kittie!" whose accompanied by to 400# Hellhounds named Mohammed and Alvin who eat camp gas cylinders and fart fire.....
Cheers,
Pat
