Bothersome Books...
Feb. 5th, 2010 07:39 amI remember two books that, while I enjoyed them very much, they bothered me because they ran contrary to my World view at the time. The 1st was Parke Godwin's 'The Masters of Solitude' from 1977.
Set in the future, it is the story about City and Coven. Centuries ago the Chinese conquered the world and enslaved everyone in the USA except for those in The City, which basically is DC to NY. The City survived and retained tech, outside, only the Wiccans had any basic skills. The few Christians left are the Villians of the book.
The concept that China would be a world power, let alone the dominant one seemed insane. Today? Not so much...
The 2nd is Sheri Tepper's 'A Plague of Angels'. Set in the not so distant future(you think it is, but you find out by the end of the book it hasn't been...)after "Man left for the Stars". Those left in N. AMerica live in 4 places, the Edges, which are what the Suburbs morphed into and they are the high tech culture. The Cities, which are now nothing more than gang run innercities up to the Edges. The Archtypal villages, where Western archetypes live and Artemisia, which is an Idiolised Native AMerican culture.
At the end you find out that it's only been a couple of generations AND that Man never even finished the space station. When i read it, I refused to beleive it could be a vaible future. Today, with both the US and Russia pulling out of space....I think it's a viable timeline....
Truth,
Pat
