Wallowing....
Mar. 4th, 2010 01:01 pmThanks to all the nastiness that February brought into my life and continues to do so, I'm off wallowing in re-reading fav books. One series by author James Alan Gardner about the Explorer Corps is well recommended.
Sometime around now, Aliens terraform a New Earth and offer to move all Humans thath both wish it and agree to Act Sentient, that is to not Murder. Those that meet the requirements get "Raptured Up", leaving only the violence prone and religious fanatics behind. Civilazation on Earth falls.
A century later,On New Earth, a disagreement over the use of Galactice tech around gene manipulation breaks the Human Civilazation into two cultures, the Technocracy(which is basically Star-faringWestern Civilization) and the Unity(a gengineered culture where folks get themselves adapted to alien envionments instead of changing those to fit Human norms. Most of the population lives on Moonships, literally starfaring habitats.).There are other Alien cultures about the same tech level for a reason. Those that are below a certain level are not contacted. Those above don't care. The Ancient races, any of them no longer Physical belong to the League of Peoples who have only one law, no non-sentients beyond the species system. Any leaving instantly die. Also, anyone ON the ship. Makes a big difference in screening for passengers!
Most of the books deal with the Explorer Corps. This Human agengy explores. Basically, the advanced folks think the lesser ones once given the tools and the rules should find things out for themselves and not many civilizations are big on Sharing. The Technocracy is a culture where even the poorest member can afford Cosmetic Surgery and even with the laws against Gengeneering, some folks(esp the RIch) see no need to follow them. Because of this, you have a population norm that looks like a Hollywood cattlecall. Also, a small population of those that their parent's native genetics or purchased didn't work out. Technocracy studies found that Ugly people are greived over less than Pretty people so all Explorers are those who don't fit modern standards.
Aliens, other than the Divians(whose Ancestors gengineered themselves into 3 types for three colonies whos basic personalities are very Human) are just that...Alien. Some pretend Human personalities to communicate but they aren't.
One of the things the books deal with is the "reason" why space-faring civilaztions are all abou the same basically. When one gets more Advanced, they "Ascend", becoming no longer bound to physical tools, their minds do it for them. Once that happens you don't have much in common with those who still need them....
Fun books, great characters. You'll never look at moss the same way again;>...
Cheers,
Pat
