I ran into this appropriate book by Anderson and Beason while trying to ignore the tv's constant blatting about the Spill. I keep it because it's a perfect example of where "co-written" novels can go terribly wrong. It's one of those where the two authorts have such different writing styles AND such different world-views that it's essentially two book.
The 1st half is a very good Sci-Fi disaster novel. An oil tanker crashes, breaks up and sinks in San Francisco Bay. The oil company who owns it is looking for a quick fix and is offered one by a dept they had created as a PR stunt.
Thing is, their "savior" is an angry scientist(not "mad";>). 1st, he's been stuck in a job that he knows is a PR stunt. Then within a yr his wife and daughter are killed by an oil tanker truck , his son dies in the Middle East and he's diagnosed with Cancer, probably from his exposure to spilled Crude. As he looks at the area that his dead son used to play, he Vows, "Never Again".....
Of course, even the scientist who wishes to wipe out all Petroleum on Earth doesn't think about the possible consequences; that what can eat Crude Oil will probably learn to eat anything MADE from it....

The 2nd is a very annoying, stupid bit about how the survivors, realizing that all the 'Greatful Dead' and other Rock band's Music is on dissolving media so they hold a Hippy Jamfest while folks still remember the Tunes....before producing food, creating shelter or protecting themselves from the forming Enemy....White Southern Males and Orange County Republicans who wish to enslave those with Darker Skin....
Cheers,
Pat

I'm driving Chuck to work today and what do I see in a pre-WWII neighborhood, with trees taller than the Powerpoles? Two Vultures eating calmly on someone's lawn. Other than my amazement at birds that big making it through the branches and lines, that can't be a good sign...esp. for the Owners while having their AM "cuppa";>...
Cheers,
Pat
