So...what's our Excuse?

In JA Gardener's "League of Peoples" Universe, the Spacefaring races are in decline. Not population(they're breeding like rabbits), Mentally. The oldest, the Cashling trading FTL drive tech for old Earth Sitcoms. In his 5th book, you discoverthat it's being done intentionally by a bunch of cowards whose majority of their species had Evolved past the Physical. They refused. To make sure they'll never have to compete, the "Shaddil" give newly space-faring races life extension technology...who don't know they are guaranteeing their descendants ride the "little bus"....
So, what's America's excuse? It's certainly not aliens. They only mess with folks that neve do anything substantial anyway;>....
