Hippy-phobia...

mdehnersAll this got me thinking. When DID my view of the Hippy-Counter-Culture Lifestyle become so negative? I just realized it started with my Senior in our Celtic Recon group and formalized with Hrafnar.
Our Senior was actually raised in a commune. His Mom made Handicrafts and worked in their Coop. He never Knew his father, just a series of "Momma's Old Men". He had to fight to go to school. She didn't think it was necessary. He was a Straight A student but she thought it was a waste. He got a scholarship, went to college and ended up working for NASA, doing what today would be considered very important work about Global Warming. I met his Mom, still living on the commune with one other lady. SHe still didn't think much of her son...he worked for the gov't. Tons of Therapy later and he still thought of himself as a failure...
Later,my experiences with Hrafnar's folk really formed a negative. Diana's daughter a walking womb, supported buy her Mom, MZB's cheques and the gov't. Not even the focus to work in a Counter-Culture job. Kids with criminal records and the best of them? Completely skilled to work the Renfaire and/or Con circuit.
Folks talk about Christianity Limiting folks Spirit. Well, this is true for many but unless you are a Polygamist,most of your kids will be able to compete with the rest of their Generation. Poverty and lack of Education is a greater threat to the Human Spirit....
Sure, there are those that DO Feel Education is very Important but IME it's the Minority, not the Majority...
