Death and Rebirth.....
Mar. 11th, 2008 02:20 pmWell, let’s NOT have that much “fun” again. Two good things DID come out of it:
1-You Know those jeans you never throw out? I can fit into mine again;>……
2-‘The Hogfather’.
If aren’t familiar with Terry Pratchett’s work, ‘The Hogfather’ is one of his “Diskworld” books where our world’s foibles are seen through a satirical medieval, magical, mythic lens. It’s a world(flat, held up by 4 elephants who stand on a gigantic sea turtle that swims through space….)where witches know magick but prefer Physiology and just plain Bullying. One with wizards that know magic but don’t practice it, instead spend their lives in bouts of mental masturbation all while having bad dietary and other habits. A world where DEATH is the Wealfulest of all…..
The story/film is a satire of Christmas, where a hit has been placed on “The Fat Man”. DEATH has replaced him to keep belief in him going because if not “the Sun will not rise”. Lots of Lore both English and European about Gods, Magic and stuff. If the Christians watching this had any idea that something of Magical substance was in their local DVD store instead of the “codswollop” of Harry Potter”, they’d go all Pitchforks and Torches! The BEST reason I’ve EVER heard for the need for a Tooth Fairy(Sympathetic Magic ).
The main character is one of my two favs in his books, Susan the Grandaughter of DEATH. Inheriting some of HIS abilities, nevertheless tries to live a normal life as a nanny. This is the nanny parents want but would never say.
The best attempt of a Pratchett movie ever, not that it takes much over the house cartoons of BBC;>. Even if you’ve never read one of his books, get the DVD. May be too dark for some kids. Esp Christian ones when they explain that “The Hogfather” is a Sacred King who must shed his blood, die and be reborn…..
Truth,
Pat
