2007 Final Report....
Mar. 18th, 2008 08:24 amLast yr I trailed two Heirloom WInter Squashes; the Japanese 'Chiriman' and the French 'Sucrine du Berry'. Both grew well and, with the exception late in the season with Powdery Mildew, disease and Insect resistant. 'C'started to show problems early on. Being a "buttercup" type, the flower scar often invited insect damage. Fruits with smal "cups" did best. Also, it's peated shape attracted the eyes of neighbor kids who'd rip them off. The few that survived, after Aging were excellent with a sweet, hazelnut flavor.
'Sucrine du Berry' grew just as well but being an Ancestor of the Butternut, the kids ignored them. The small blossom scar prevented insect damage as well. The fruit surviving to harvest were numberous and decent sized. After Aging, the meat was as described, sweet as a berry!
The final test was keeping quality. A couple of each were kept simply to see how longthey'd last in a cool spot. Two days ago I noted the last 'Chiriman' had begun to go soft. The last 'SDB' is still firm. The WInner!!!!!!!
