mdehnersI wish this Bloody(still sometimes…) Pneumonia would just get over. Last night I coughed so hard I threw out my back. Thanks to this, I forgot that I’d put the tomato seedlings out on the porch(because the weather was so good…). They’re all showing signs of shock but hopefully they won’t be set back too much…
Other than that, the planning, planting, etc of this yr’s crops is going well. The winner of 2003’s Eggplant trial is the only “keeper”, other than last yr’s Winter Squash trial, ‘Sucrine du Berry’. ‘Cambodian Giant’ is a typical firm white and greens Asian type except as the name implies, instead of golf ball sized, it’s baseball sized! I lost the Aji Limon Hot Pepper so everything this yr is new.
All the Tomatoes are not only new, they are all early varieties(last yr’s TT was using Heat resistant cultivars…a total waste.)AND only one is red. I’m testing Black, White, Pink and two Yellows(one, a gift). See if the genetic differences do anything. This yr’s new Eggplant is ‘Kamo’, a Japanese Heirloom used in temple cuisine.
The voucher for my Sweet Potato slips came so they will be delivered at the right time and one of my crop list mates offered some starts from his Okinawan SP’s, which are Purple through and through, sweet as candy!
Speaking of candy,I’m trying a number of desserts this yr. The Litchii Tomato which is the size of a cherry tomato and tastes like cherries. 3 Melons, an American(a variety grown by Jefferson), and Asian(Thai) and a European(English). I’m also going to try a Watermelon again, but this time using the method I learned for the Winter Squash. A White or a Yellow Flesh in the 10# range.
The Quince’s buds are just opening and it looks like the chance of another Hard frost is small. Hopefully, I’ll have enough for a pie this yr….
