On one of my Heathen lists, a discussion is going on. One side's position can be summed up in the paraphrasing of a recent post:
How DARE you imply that those of us that put our hobbies ahead of the Regin are less Heathen than those you who don't!?!?!
To be it's a "no-brainer" but I've learned in the last 30+ yrs from Wicca, through CR to Heathenry that there are a lot of folks that agree with the above statement. Those who put their Way/Faith/etc above the mundane(and yes, SCA, Renfairs and COns ARE part of the mundane world...)are oft given shit by those that don't, esp if they're "called" on it. It's funny(in a sad way), I remember listening to a SCA/Renfair lady berating a guy because he'd put work ahead of coming to a local moot. Yet she herself often missed them because of SCA, Renfaire and hobby/craft club activities. SHew didn't "get" that his excuse was valid. He was the breadwinner in his family. Her? Her live-in BF took car of most of the bills and rent so she could work part time. Not to devote to her Heathen practice. So that she could play at being someone she wasn't.
In truth, there's a lot of folks in alt-religions that consider their Ways little more than something like they do their SCA, RPG or LARP persona(s). In the long run it becomes obvious. They leave to follow the next "shiny object" or a major crisis sends them scurrying back to a "real religion". I've not been a "gamer" or in SCA since "81". I've had a number of near-death experiences over the yrs and am still "Tru". I wish my experiences didn't make me feel sometimes that I'm the exception, not the rule...
Truth,
Pat
