Jul. 1st, 2008 06:29 amThe storms we've had lately certainly have been good in general. While we're still way below our Rainfall totals for the yr, it does help. Unfortunately, like many gifts, they're two-edged....
Other than the Flooding,the crops cane get damaged. Not just the obviously drowned. Many crops are from regions with intermittent rainfall and have Evolved to deal with it. One method is to suck up as much water as the plant can and store it in it's tissues. This increased internal pressure often bursts the skins of any fruit nearing ripeness. Those cracks then let in bacteria. Fermenting Figs, Tomatoes and watermelons aren't "winey" at all;>....
The Tendersweet(a yellow fleshed standard watermelon) are a total loss, as is all present Tomatoes. Only the early ripening figs are, so if things dry a bit in the next couple weeks it'll be fine....
