Since having this Cold, I've been watching an inordinant amt of TV in it's variouos delivery platforms. One yesterday, 'Clatterford' from the BBC not only allowed me to get a number of the jokes in the movie 'Hot Fuzz', it triggered Buttons I didn't know I had...
The show is a pretty generic BBC offering: English villiage filled with eccentric characters. The difference is that the village MD's daughter is a stereotypical Pagan. The scary thing, the Button-pushing thing was that those stereotypes addressed about 2/3's of the Het Pagan women I've known in the last 25 yrs...
"It Takes a Villiage" as Mrs Clinton's book said. Well, in 'Clatterford', it's true. The Villiagers Know the self-effacing woman that runs the only medical establishment for miles will drop everything to coddle her eternally Childish daughter and protect her grandson. So, to guarantee that she stays at the clinic, they "cover" for the Pagan daughter by feeding, clothing and protecting her son who basically wanders all day. In one episode, after the death of her husband(and the Pagan's father), she's told that she gets to watch her grandson because her daughter's taking the yurt with her present boyfriend to protest the construction of a windfarm(which in an earlier episode she was celebrating as a Clean Energy SOurce). She couldn't Understand how her mother, who had just lost her husband(and her Father)could be so selfish as to prevent her from "Saving the Mother Earth"....
The character is so spot on the Hippy-Pagan female that I have friends that if forced to watch it would cringe at it's accuracy. At it's COre, the Idea that it's "All About Youself" and that the Universe "Owes" you a Living, not the other way around is damn accurate. One moment pointed out the Absurdity of the Pagan woman's Life, she was selling Handmade soap, yet she herself dosen't beleive in using it.....
Truth,
Pat
