"Absolutely" Dreadful....
Mar. 16th, 2009 06:34 amIf you have any Gay friends over 30, you've probably heard them quote "Ab-Fab". 'Absolutely Fabulous', a British comedy about two aging chain-smoking lushes in the Fashion world was one of those quintisenntial shows that Gays love. Great Writing, great characters, a lot of fun. So, when Fox decided they were going to make an AMerican version, the Homo WOrld cringed. Now, it's seemed for good reason.
There is something quinisenttially American Media about stealing a Foreign show without Understanding what it was about. 'Ab-Fab' was about an "It" Girl and her best friend, 20 yrs AFTER she was "It". Still acting like the SPoiled princess when it's no longer "cute". Trying to be something you haven't been, even if you went back decades. It's about the culture of Celebrity and it's shallowness. The biggest fukkup is Saffi, the daughter of eternally Hippy Edina. In the British show SHE is the Adult, despirately trying to keep her family together while her Mother Parties and sleeps around. The Fox folks just plopped an American stereotype of the whining Teen.
Gone are the Bitchy women with a cocktail in one hand, ciggie in the other, trying to pick up guys they couldn't even when they were more than a decade younger. Instead, we have a tepid 'Golden Girls'...without the Writing, Sophia ot Blanche.
Cheers,
Pat
