Sep. 28th, 2009 07:23 amWhen I'm Stressed out, I tend to turn to favorite books and authors to get lost in. One of my favs is the Sci-Fi/Fantasy writer; LE Modessitt Jr, which I've mentioned a number of times over the yrs. The Core is always Ethics and how Ethical folks deal with the Unethical.
Two of my fav "Universes" of his is the Ecolitan and the ParaFaiths. In the Former earlier series, a planet colonised by hi-tech Green Pagans copes over the centuries with it's larger and more militaristic neighbors. In the latter, a hi-tech Green Atheistic culture deals with it's aquisative neighbor, the fusion of Mormon and Muslim beleifs. Appearantly, the Bush yrs made him lose heart in America's Anglos being part of a Positive future....
What's so Interesting to me is that the main characters are extremely Ethical yet most modern Progressives would consider them monsters. In the 1st series, after many warnings to Earth to leave them alone they disrupt Earth's ecology, killing millions. That Earth had already destroyed physically whole planets and had murdered millions over many worlds and would continue to do so to many modern folks would have been Irrelivant.
In a later book in the series they create a dinosaur killer which again kills millions. As the main characters of both books puts it, the citizens allowed this by both action AND inaction. They could have prevented but had little Interest in what happened in their names to others. They are just as guilt as the solider that was "just following orders"....
In the 2nd series the main character tries to change the Church and it's warlike "Missionaries". His actions last a generation and in the 2nd book of that series the main character realises that societies and religions are like people and sometimes they are "twisted". No mattter how much and how many times you "untwist", they will always return to their default setting. Whole planets are sterilized in this....
An Interesting aside is that both series refer to a "historical" writer(Exton Land. LE Modesitt's Alter ego is so popular that these bit are refered to in other works...try a Google some time;>)showingthat these Truths were long Known but that Humans are lazy and would rather not take Responsibility that to do so....
Cheers,
Pat
