Adventures in Decreasing Waste....
Oct. 13th, 2021 06:42 amA couple yrs I started decreasing my use of Plastics in my life, though I didn't get serious about it until a couple months before moving. My brother mentioned that they don't have curbside Recycling and there is one bin per house.
I started 1st with the bathroom, replacing liquid with bar soap; body AND shampoo. Took about a week for my hair to adjust but since it's actually softer than before;>! The Landry was next going for solid(powder or most likely gelatin pods) usually in Paper packaging when available. The same with the kitchen with the dishwasher. The emergency handwashing soap is still liquid but when this bottle is done I'm testing solid forms. Like with all of these methods, you need to "testdrive" materials from different producers to find that which works the way you need and want.
Which brings us to the wardrobe. This wasn't difficult since I don't like man-made fiber clothing so the vast majority is Cotton with a few Linen and Wool pieces. I'm not a big fan of "Bamboo" because:
1: very little if any of it came from any Bamboo(mostly tree pulp)
2: Is a man made fiber, just made of Cellulose instead of Petroleum but still as Processed
It's a slow process but worth it simply for the decreased waste. In Niceville we were filling a garbage bin twice a week and a same sized Recycling bin once a week and now we're down to a single bin. Chris decided it would be worth the extra cost to have a bin per household;>!
Cheers,
Pat
