My Mom grew up in a town that had no Electricity. Their house had no indoor plumbing, heated and cooked over a wood stove and actually used a horse and wagon to get around. In her life we got to the Moon, the Internet was created and she saw her Gay son be able to be Married...just like his 3 Het brothers always could.
In my life I saw the Moon Landing, Human Rights expanded in many countries as well as here......and then I've got to live long enough to have some of those Rights so far stripped in the USA and Afghanistan.
I just lived too long....

Yeah ... these people really never liked the US. The country that gave science and public education a massive shove, that offered a tremendous range of places and ways to live, and made it possible to start again at any age. And what seems to have triggered them most—even more than uppity gays and women and a black lawyer winning the presidency—was when the toughest nut of life here, the health care delivery system, finally got a chink beaten off the corner of its dysfunction. Like the prospect of people actually staying alive was a bridge too far. I know that from their perspective it's a matter of power. And I never believed in American exceptionalism or regarded the Declaration of Independence as anything except cynical word games. But the place offered so much, to its inhabitants and to the world, and they all must know on some level that they're doing the very opposite of making it great.
