WARNING! Botanidrivel!
Jun. 15th, 2009 02:03 pm(The plants in discussion are Relatives of the African Violet and Floirest Gloxinia...the latter something I used to hybridize...)
The 1st seedling of Thad's(Thad is known for his Episcia hybrids) Smithiantha Crosses has buds. Should be interesting since the plants he Crossed were from a SE ASian hybridizer who also does Kohlerias. Unfortunately, size may be an issue. I've noted with the hybridizer's Kohleria hybrids that they(not good at determining Male and female names in non-Japanese ASian languages;>)are definitely NOT bred for the AMerican houseplant market;>! My Kohleria 'An's DIce Dots' is a quite pretty plant with furry brown leaves and light pink Blossoms with Purple spots but it also takes up about as much space as the average Dacshund;>! Luckly, Smithianthas are smaller plants anyway but I've already a few that are in 6" pots and are still juvenile; the standard blooms in a 4" African Violet pot.
What would be neat if some of them bloom when my Achimenes and Eucodonias do. I'd like to try my hand at some Intergeneric Hybridizing. My last attempt never made it to the blooming stage.....
