Movie Recommendation...
Jun. 17th, 2009 02:56 pmWhen I saw 'The Ramen Girl' in the videostore, I wasn't sure. I really don't like AMerican movies set in Japan. It's not. It's a Japanese movie for Americans. It's like the difference between Japanese and American Anime. The Japanese versions will always be centered around the Community over the Self, the Amreican the other way around.
In 'TRG', a self-absorbed American girl gets dumped by the boyfriend she followed to Tokyo. While crying, drinking and Smoking on her porch, a breeze blows up, ringing the Spirit Bells making her notice a little Ramen Shop down the street. Even though they're closed, the Shop owner and his wife feel sorry for the sobbing American and give her a bowl of noodles. They are so perfect that she feels better. Looking up she sees the Ubiquitous Beconning Cat which guestures to her to come. She shows up the next day and every AM to ask if he'll Teach her. She weasels her way into the shop and finally he takes her as his apprentice in Japanese-style. The kicker is she never really learns Japanese. The whole point is that she Learns by Feeling, which as a very good cook myself IS the real way to do so......
Sweet, nice flick. And shocking for folks that know me...no monsters, no blood;>!
Cheers,
Pat(Who's going to whip up some dipping sauce for some Somen for dinner...)
