Blaugh!!!!! 80F< at 0600 this AM. Need on of those Roman "thingies" to "squeegie" off the sweat< G >. I admit, it's funny to see Ethel (our geriatric Dachsund...once a team with her daughter Lucy) spread out on the tile floor for the max chilling effect.Even the plants in the house don't look too thrilled. Going to have to break down and turn on the ac...
Last night we had dinner with the folks. Got the usual "hurang" about not harvesting Dad's garden enough. It's an old arguement. There's just two of us and Chuck works Swing so we only eat dinner together a couple times a week. Add to that my father's dogged insistance to not only overplant but to plant that which is commonly available in a market and...
It's a concept I have a hard time wrapping my frontal lobes arround. I mean, fresh produce is of course best but WHY grow the exact same varieties as are commonly seen in the markets? Of course, he can't understand why I would plant Heirloom tomatoes that "bruise easily, when you can grow one's that don't". Of course, this is the same man that used to grow Red Delicious Apples< G >...
This Summer's not been very kind to my "Heathen herbs". While the Rainfall and Humidity may be in the range of many, the Heat is not and combined is a Disease and Death fest, no matter how "Esoteric" the measures I take. All of the mature Foxloves are reeking mounds of rot, all the violets have disappeared and the last Lavendar is dead. Even the Hawthorn-Rowan hybrid that did so well the previous yrs is not doing well. It broke Dormancy 3 months late and still hasn't leafed out properly. It also looks like I'm losing the Plum as well as the Black Apricot (from the Cuacus Mts). The Apricot at least'll make a good trellis for the old Southern rose I planted this Spring.
On the Positive side, anything Tropical is doing QUITE well. The Ornamental as well as the culinary Gingers are going gang-busters, though I'm not quite sure how to process Turmeric. I do, however know a number of things to do with Galangal...some actually involve food< G >! The Lemongrasses are the size of a Pampass Grass clump. I'll definitely have to add Palmarosa to my herb order since it's a close relation. And all the Sages with the exception of the common cooking are doing very well...
Time to go out and fight some birds for my breakfast figs. The lil bastards don't even wait till their fully ripe. Grumble....
Troth,
Pat (the rather damp and moderately Rank< G >...)
