The Ancestors and Me...
Jul. 7th, 2004 04:01 pmLivejournal has been an interesting experience. I’d been reading Swain Wodening’s journal for a while but hadn’t joined till recently…
It’s been Strange, mostly because the Heathens on LJ present themselves as Universalist and most of my Heathen lists are Tribal or Folkish. Some LJ folks are, well pretty undistinquishable from my local Pagan community in World-View and Politics. I really don’t fit in with the majority of the posters. Luckly there are a few who don't seem to pull out their Holy Symbols when they see a post of mine< G >!
The oddest experience so far has been when The Ancestors are brought up. Because the Central Theme in my Path has been to Return to the Way of my Ancestors, my 1st thought is that they meant this as well. I’ve Learned that this is seldom the case. I’ve also noticed that when the Subject is brought up, the discussion changes course…unfortunately often into screams of "racist"...
“I’m Proud of my Ancestors” will be said, yet I’ve heard no avowed Universalist say WHY so, in a Spiritual Context. Me, I’m Proud of the Ancestors I Knew because they shaped the Present “ME” , giving me the "tools" I use on this Journey. The Christian One’s I didn’t know for those whose Acts that Strengthened the Family’s Collective Might and Main. BUT my Heathen Ancestors Beliefs are/were the CENTRAL Drive in this Life’s Journey . I wouldn’t BE Heathen if it weren’t for my Heathen Ancestors. I'd be something Else. I hear Universalist folks talking about “throwing off the yoke of Christianity”, yet few have Interest in Returning/Reconstructing/etc what WAS BEFORE. Most have “Spun” a Dream a lot like a Spiritual version of the SCA, “Heathenry as it Should Have Been”. While there are things about Historical Heathen Culture I CERTAINLY don’t wish to Bring Back, I’ve yet to run into ANYTHING of a truly “religious” Nature I wouldn’t...
