Spring Is....
Mar. 14th, 2006 03:58 pmWhile Spring is Officially a week away, it’s here anyway in all It’s Beauty. One of the few things I ever agreed with Starhawk on was to Create a calendar based on where you Live. This has two basic Conflicts though, that of Astrology and Botany. What coincided in a certain region of Europe that ended with the Weather change that ended the Greenland colony doesn’t to the majority of those Following Reconstructed or Inspired European Ways today, in our myriad locals.
Here in the Florida Panhandle, we are about on-time. Our last Frost Date is the week before Spring Equinox and by then Mid-Spring Flowers and early leafing plants are decorating the Land. Landvættr, mostly quiet through the Cold and Wet are now noticeable(to those who can See…), oddly enough in my yard nearest the Lemongrass, Variegated Mugwort and various Sages. It’s the “Last Call” to plant crops that need cool weather to sprout….those that need it to Grow will have to wait till Fall;>!
The Tomatoes, Peppers(Hot and the Sweet), Eggplants, Roselles(a form of Hibiscus that produces calyxes that taste like Cranberry) are all waiting for the 1st week in April when they can go out with all the Frost-tender plants stored in the Cold frame like Guavas and Papayas. Perennials are being moved and divided, the extras given to friends, family and to our local Mastergardener’s Org to Promote Regional, Native and Heirloom plant use. I’ve Rescued a number(with Permission…) from the yard of my Deceased neighbor since the SOP for these old homes is if they aren’t sold and torn down, they are stripped of their Landscape and replanted with whatever the big DIY stores sell, losing plants that have been often brought by families from their individual “Old Countries”. I don’t Understand it, though my brother is of the same mindset. He’s always at me to get rid of “all that stuff” and he’s even offered to pay(we rent from him…) to replace the lot with sod AND a service to feed/weed and maintain. As nice as that would be Physically, it would be horrific Aesthetically, Spiritually and Philosophically…
Troth,
Pat
