mdehnersWhen you are with fellow Heathens in Cyber or Midgarðr (Pagans as well...), you´ll notice a topic consistantly missing...the Regin. Sure, who´s the Blot for and the ubiquitous “I´m a ____smann/_____goði/yðja” but little to nothing about Them. Perhaps it’s due to previous religious identification. We don’t Wish to sound either like we used to or worse, like our parents. Very few Identify “Faith” as the 1st “F” in their Lives....
Personally, I don’t Understand it. Maybe folks feel that the admonition about Bloting too much applies to any and all Interaction or Study about the Regin. Maybe because Personal Experience with various Dieties makes it REAL. With many Heathens as well as Pagans, there’s a Feeling that they haven’t done all their “Kubler Ross” on their old Belief-system and subconciously Feel by fussing about with superficalities they won’t “really” get in trouble with YHVH for what often looks and acts more like a LRPG than a religion as valid(or more;>!) as the more “socially acceptable”. Sure, personal expereinces are UPG but therre’s a big difference between “this is what I experienced” and “____ told me to tell you all that....”. If one’s experiences contradict what the Being(s) in the Lore would do, then you might wonder Who or What you’re “Tuned into”. Certainly, don’t expect your Revalation to be accepted as Gospel Truth. Heck, my Accuracy Divination-wise is near 100% and I still wouldn’t consider what was/is told to me Personally as applicable to another’s Life(though it probably would;>).
I no longer ID myself as Folkish, though my Beliefs haven’t changed. Because of my experiences with “folk” of various “flavors” I’ve become what I jokingly call “Reginist”. That is, the Regin are the Center of my Life and Practice. Since I’m not going to be in any kindred or such in the rest of my Lifetime, it’s silly to ID oneself as a particular “Denomination”. Besides, many Folkish are militantly Folk and/or Family 1st, giving little time to the Regin except as Guest of Honor at Blot or Symbel.
I’ve always, even as a kid been “God-centered”, even when I didn’t Know who were my Ancestral God/desses. I’ve always been more Interested in both Info and Experiences with Them more than the “tech” or organizational model of a particular “Way” I was participating in. Sometimes, to use an old Wiccan saying, “sometimes the red altarcloth is just the only clean altarcloth”. We get too bogged down in minutia and miss that which we should be. We’re here to Learn all we can to Help the Regin “stack the odds” in our favor against those who Oppose both Them and Us....not to care out “gang territory”.
