mdehnersI realized something Interesting the other day. I hadn’t noticed Housewights until after I “Came Home” to Heathenry. After all, I’d been “Seeing” Ghosts and Nature Spirits all my life. I simply hadn’t been “Looking”. Looking back, I now realize that some of the stuff I’d Identified as Ghosts or Ghost activity were that of Húsvættr.
I guess it’s not surprising. After all, even “Mundanes” have heard of Ghosts and Nature Spirits. And let’s face it, who’s going to take you seriously about “brownie sightings”;>! Also, both Wicca and CR tend to focus ON Landvættr or the Dead, Spirit-wise.
I’ve been paying more attention this yr for some reason to the Wights, esp. that of House and Land. Luckly, I Learned a couple decades ago that “Appearance” is simply your Mind’s Interpretation of the experience. Back in the early “80’s” I’d been Meditating in front of my altar(this was back in my Wiccan days..) and an orb of light appeared. It slowly orbited each candle in almost a dance, quite attractively. I can remember thinking, “This is a Fire Elemental, shouldn’t it look like a dragon?” And it then “morphed” into one about the size of my hand. It looked at me with blatant Amusement then turned back into an orb, did a couple of pavanes then left.
The Housewights here and those in San Francisco are different in appearance but not too. I Know they really don’t look like what I See(and don’t expect others to See them the same way either…) but my “filters” seem to Interpret them AS related Beings. About the same size, basic form, activities. Ever so often, it’s like the format changes, usually only for a day. The closest thing to it was an episode of the Cartoon Network’s ‘Grimm adventures of Billy and Mandy’ where Billy gets “Lasix” surgery with the Grim Reaper’s Scythe. Each time they “correct” his vision, the visual format changed. I think they do it on purpose to remind me that all isn’t as it seems. Recently, for a whole day it was Anime. Quite amusing.….
Housewights can be Taskmasters. They don’t like Disorder in Their house and if you “slack off” in the Domestic Hygiene activities, They get “grumpy”. It’s really not that big of a deal though. Sweep a couple times a week, mop at least Weekly, take the garbage out daily. Not anything that even with my problems is odious. Actually, I’ve found by doing such, They don’t request Sacrifices of any kind. I never told a Heathen friend that if she just kept a cleaner house, her Housewights wouldn’t require her to “pay” with expensive, hard-to-find materials. ‘Course, she’d rather go shopping in Gourmet stores for Organic European Butter or Buttermilk than change her litterboxes more than weekly or wash dishes before meals are served on Tupperware lids;>…..
