Flower Power!

mdehnersMy "baby" is Blooming again. One of my many hobbies is Hybridizing. I'm one of a handfull of folks world-wide working with scented form of Gloxinia(those big trumpet flowers at the grocery with fuzzy leaves). My 'Deep Purple' strain has been doing well in shows in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most American shows use Dale Martin's work. Considering she's the one to discover the mutation back in the "80's", most are decended from her's, including mine...with the exception of my discovery of a scented plant of a wild collection. Unfortunately, it's not useful since the flower form and colour are Dominant...no flashy babies!
My baby is actually a failure scent-wise. It's Carnation-scent is Intermittant. The colour, however...
I don't have a camera good enough to show it's true appearance. It's cup-shaped throat is a bright lime yellow with purple spots. surrounding the throat is a ring the colour of Concord Grape jelly. The rest is a powder Blue.It looks like the last bit of a Western Sunset. The only thing that keeps it from being Patented is that it is a slipper, which is presently OUt Of Style with the great unwashed masses. I personally like them because it gives them a delicacy that the big Pelorics(all petals the same size and facing upwards)lack....
