English Only...

mdehnersI came to an odd realization today. Other than English, the most Useful language to me to Know would be Japanese, followed by Korean. “But Pat. Don’t you live in Neuva Cuba?”. Well, yes I do but between my experiences living on the edge of the Mission district in San Francisco and the Mayday Aztlan Protests a couple yrs ago, I don’t have any need for Spanish. I don’t even buy produce from Latin America(besides, it’s healthier to eat Seasonally and Regionally, not even adding in supporting local farm folk…). Heck, I won’t even buy “wraps”;>
I’ve always been a Japanophile. As a kid Mom would tell us stories of her life in Occupation Japan. There were also all the English language books she had. The culture and the food have always been big influences in my Life. The Korean? Well, it’s the language of the majority of Asian market owners here;>!
I’ve noticed in the last couple of yrs that reading Lore in it’s original languages has become less and less a part of my life. The insights gleaned have not really been worth the effort to both Learn AND to KEEP that which has been Learned. In Honesty, a couple of good translations(generally, three or more is best) can give you pretty much the “jist” of what the Ancestors had said. Even when I was in the Bay Area, the only Interest anyone had in those languages was for effect during ritual…AS theatre. Not even as a way of showing Respect for the Regin. I’ve long left my Old Norse and Old Englisc lists and don’t see much need to go back…unless a tribe of either fell from a rip in the Space-Time Continuum. And in that case I’d still do better than my neighbors with my rapidly diminishing abilities anyway….
