I’m a self-confessed Lore Whore and Edda-thumper. As far as I’m concerned, any Heathen who’s not read at least the Havamal and Voluspa has no Right to argue anything about Heathenry. That said, the Lore isn’t the end-all…it’s the BEGINNING.
The Lore gives you enough Info on the majority of Regin to get a “Feel” for Their Character. While the God/desses are not “Job Descriptions”, they do have Individuality and that means Personality. Anyone who’s ever Experienced “The Old Man” will never mistake Him for the White God, or even Laufey’s Childe. The Lore allows you to Tune In as well as Tune Out. Think of it as a form of GPS, street address or even a telephone number. No one may Answer but at least you’re looking in the right place(s):>!
Being a Heathen is more than doing Rites. It’s about both Living AS a Heathen and Living WITH the Regin and other Wights. You CAN have a Personal Relationship with Them and SHOULD. Otherwise you are no different than the Christian that goes to church and Sees and Feels nothing beyond social stimulation. Open your Mind and Heart. Listen. Compare what you Find with the Lore. If it isn’t at least in the Spirit, be Polite and send it on It’s way. It simply isn’t what our Heathen Ancestors would Accept AS Heathen. ‘Course, some folks don’t Care about whether the Ancestral Heathens would consider something(or someone) Heathen. In that case, why call yourself Heathen? There is nothing Wrong with being an Inspirationalist. There is something Wrong with saying you are one thing but your Actions and Beliefs say you are another.
We don’t have everything. The church and those Ancestors of us who Shamed us made sure of that but we DO have enough of the “building” left to reconstruct a “temple” that the Ancestors would both Recognize AND be Proud of us for doing so….
