A thread on one of my lists made me think. I decided to post a little of what I’ve picked up in a couple of decades of PR/Activette work for both Spiritual and Sexual Orientation:

1:Know Your Audience. You want to get your points out as clearly and as understandably as possible. Speaking their “lingo” gets both the point(s) across AND decreases the “Other” factor, making you and your point(s) more acceptable. Don’t “talk down” to them either….

2:Know Your Interviewer. Know their world-view AND their habits, esp. that of Interviewing. Also Know that they ALWAYS have the upper hand. ALWAYS assume that they are the ENEMY and will use whatever they give you against you. Just leave the “ammo” at home…

3:Know YOURSELF. Why are you doing it? An “Evangelical” is just as big of a disaster as an “Egotist”. Both will lose, not win credibility with your audience.

4:PRESENTATION is 9:10ths of EVERYTHING. Sadly, this is where most are broken, not made. The reason you’re supposed to be there is to present your point(s) in a manner that will turn POV’s in your favor. It’s not “ALL ABOUT YOU”. Leave your “Creative and/or Independent Spirit” HOME. I’ve “won” more simply by being the most “normal” on a Bloody panel. You’ll oft “win” simply by being someone that the audience could Feel comfortable around/with. You will lose being threatening and/or disturbing. Grow up. “Freaking the Mundanes” is childish. If Your “Inner Childe” is that Dominant, leave the interviews to those whose have been at least Potty Trained…

Whether it be Sexual or Spiritual Orientations, REMEMBER that you’re trying to win if not Acceptance, then Benign Indifference. Your supposed to make you fellow ____’s Lives easier, not harder after your interview….REMEMBER?
