Yesterday, as I was surfing through the mass of Christian shows on our local Cable system(Christian Channels, Networks and regular channels carrying “appropriate” Sunday Programming”) I had an experience I’d NEVER had before. I Felt Envy and a bit of Jealousy…..
Here were folks who actually Believed that their religion was REAL. That their God and Avatar actually Existed and had Influence in their Lives. That at least tried once a week to Live their Beliefs. WOW!!!!!!!!! No one arguing if They even Existed and IF They did, were They more than simply a function of Brain Chemistry, normal or ab. No one outwardly saying that their religion is nothing greater than Oktoberfest, Groundhog Day or the town pancake breakfast. …
It was soooo weird. All these yrs I’d Looked Down on Christians for actually Believing that their religion was REAL. I’d got so caught up in the fact that they Believed it was True for Everybody that I’d totally Ignored the Positive aspects, something I Wished more Heathens, Wiccans and Pagans did….actually Believe the stuff we say we do….
Part of our problem is that we’re too damn Smart for our own good;>. We can argue ourselves out of pretty much anything… Esp. if it conflicts with something we’d rather do;>. We’re good at Word Games as well. Recently I’d “listened” to an argument on what a “god” was. It was pretty obvious that the term had no real meaning anymore since it could be applied to everything from One of the Regin to your Aunt Flow…or Hitler. Ah…for the days when folks agreed what god, demi-god, spirit, ghost, etc meant….
‘Course, we’re not big on Commitment either. We felt “Committed” as kids and that experience has pretty much firmed up most of our Feelings toward the concept. “How can you Commit to something if you don’t Know if it’s Right?” someone once said to me. You just do, esp. if you’re a member of a “Heroic” Way.
If there is nothing really out there, nothing really matters in the long run. If it does and you’re Right, you’ll lose “points” for being such a spineless weenie. If you’re Wrong, at least you Know you actually stood up for something in your Life. Who Knows? Even if you’re Wrong you may get “points” for having some “Guts”….
