Thoughts on the New Yr...
Dec. 26th, 2007 11:27 amTo most folks, post X-mas means clean-up, returns and even diets. To me, here in the Florida Panhandle it means Crop Planning for the next yr. You see, we have really only three seasons since the period from when nights are Freezing until they are in the 70’sF runs a couple of weeks. What most folks think of as Spring veggies are planted in Fall and early Summer ones if you want them(like Beefsteak Tomatoes) have to be started no later than the last week of January. That means this is the time to look at what worked last yr and what might this and plan(and order;>) accordingly….
While I finally got the “hang” of growing Winter Squash here, I think I’m going to switch all that production into Sweet Potatoes, esp. since I’ve discovered a source for Heirloom and Asian cultivars. Also, for some reason they aren’t as Sweet when grown here. I may plant a Seminole Pumpkin though. If I could have only 3 sources, they would be:
Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds(www.rareseeds.com)
Kitazawa Seed Company(www.kitazawaseed.com)
Sand Hill Preservation Center(www.sandhillpreservation.com)
Everything for the anti-frankenfood home grower/small family farm type;>
As the catalogues arrive, the highlighter is busy with Maybes, definitelies and Weells;>.
On sort of the subject, if you can find it(through a fansub or at your video store), pick up the Anime ‘Moyashimon’. This surreal show is about a Freshman at an Ag college who has the ability to Perceive and Communicate with Microbes. A Gift that definitely cuts both ways;>!
Truth,
Pat
