DVD Recommendation: 'Negima!?'
Mar. 7th, 2012 10:09 amThis juvie Anime series is just fun fluff. Think 'Harry Potter' meets 'Doogie Howser' meets 'Facts of Life';>...
Negi is the son of the most Powerful Wizard today. Taking magically after him, he finishes his schooling at age 10 but the Laws of Wizardry won't allow him to be a full Wizard untill Maturity. So, they ship him off to Japan to teach at a girl's boarding school, where most of his students are older than him. Oh, and because of his age they have him "room" with them in the dorm;>.
The rules are a bit more draconian than 'HP' in regard to being found out by non-magical folk;you get stripped of your Powers and turned into an animal. The Council sends two Spying Sprites to keep an "eye" on him. His Familiar, when they are 1st discovered thanks to a Vampire attack on campus sugggests using a "loophole"; having the girl make a Magical contract which gives them 3 Magical forms. This is where much of the series comedy comes from; the adding of the entire student body as Negi discovers how "nosy" girls are and the Powers themselves...since he's too young and inexperienced to control WHICH each girl has will Manifest. One form is Powerful in itself. One,which turns the contractee into a cute animal whose only weapon is the "Puss-n-Boots" big-eyed "Ahhhhhh" factor and the Cosplay form which turns the contractee into an Anime archtype....sometimes useful and/or appropriate.
A fun bit of fluff for dark days....
Cheers,
Pat
