If you've read this for a while you MAY remember me recommending an Anime series about what we in the West call Nature Spirits affect humans called Mushishi. Well, they've begun a new one.
The 1st time I caught this show I was stunned because it showed what I SAW and explained things as I'd figured out from simple Observation. Gee! a whole culture agreed with me;>!
It's just begun but if the original is any indication, it'll be a Wonder....
Cheers,
Pat

Here in "The Dangly Bits", Summer begins when the night Temps go consistently from the 40'sF to the 60's. Days are now consistently in the 80'sF. Which means everything gets planted.
So far the 'Neptune' Tomato is doing well. They're disease free, blooming and the 1st small fruits are forming. That's ahead of the only Tomato to do well here, the Everglades Wild. Still too early to tell if it'll be a "keeper";>!
This yr pretty much everything except the Fengyuan Eggplants are new cultivars OR complete new species. Since Spinach doesn't "do" well here(no matter the season), I'm always out on the lookout for a really good substitute. While Okinawaan and Mayan Spinach do great here, their flavors or textures don't make them a great sub(though good in their own ways. O is great in salads and M in soups). Trying New Zealand and Malabar Spinaches as well as Caloo(Amaranth, not Taro;>). Just planted the Malabar today.
As it stands now, the Cukes continue to be a "bust". I thought I MIGHT have one resistant to our local diseases and pest but already there are only 3 seedlings left. So, I planted the rest of the row with 'Bonanza' Luffa, which when young is supposed to be like a cross between Summer Squash and Okra. It's also the 1st yr I've tried Long Beans but I know they do well locally 'cause one of my Thai neighbors grows them;>.
The Hosui Pear has it's 1st crop forming EVER, though that last Cold Snap pretty much caught the Shinseki Pear at the worst possible moment...I only see a couple and they don't look "right". There's a number of Quinces on the Aromatika and the Pomegranate for the 1st time is covered in blossoms!
Of the Ornamentals, I appear to have lost all but one of my Blooming sized Plumerias and Old Fashioned Pentas. 90% of the Sambac Jasmine I got as a cutting form my now Passed on neighbor that her husband brought back from the Korean War died but the bit that did looks good. The two other cultivars I had growing in the garden haven't sprouted even from the roots but when the one in the greenhouse had 90% damage...
I still haven't got around to cutting down Chuck's Norfolk Island Pine. He rescued it from the bin at his old work and it had gone from lightstand to window to greenhouse to yard and lived well in it's last position for 5 before this Winter.
I reaaly need to get that out of there!
Cheers,
Pat
