The Elephant in the Room......
Mar. 24th, 2008 11:13 amWhat's Interesting to me about the dialogue about the Obama/Wright subject is something that I seem to be the only one noticing. That is, how many folks state that they follow a particular Way, yet do not share the Central Beliefs of thier Way, Denomination, Congregation or Clergy. They say they are one thing, yet by Action and Belief are NOT. They simply because they say they ARE.
This isn't unusual, but most folks seem to Ignore it or Accept it. I'd say a fair amt of my friends, who are of many Ways don't Believe or Follow the majority of Beliefs and Values of their Ways. ALmost always, when asked, they respond with a "Weeeeeelllll.....". I think part of heis is that most humans feel uncomfortable without a herd around them. They'd rather pretend to BE that "animal" than either standing on their own or even looking for a herd of those with similar Beliefs and Values. Ruts, as I know well are comfortable places and if you don't have a problem making those around you think you're "One Of Them", many would rather remain. 'Course, Humans are very good at Deception, esp with themselves.
As a young Gay man(and as an old one now;>), I couldn't Understand those that remained in Christianity or Mormonism. Heck, Mormonism is even more Homophobic than the Catholic Church! WHy would you remain where not only are you not wanted(unless you pretend to be something you're not) but that you Know that their views on subjects that you KNow deeply are Wrong? "Weeeeeell...".
Don't think that this behavior is "Christocentric";>! How many Wiccans or Heathens Beleive and Act contrary to the Beleifs and Values of their particular Ways? How many say they are _____ but refute in Word and Deed the Ways of that Path? Heck, how many whose Practices contain more of stuff they PERSONALLY came up than that of their Way?
Like I said, "the Elephant in the Room". No one talks about it because then you have to "deal" with it. The "It" being, if you don't Beleive the majority of Core Beliefs and Values of a Way, are you really a Follower of that Way?
Truth,
Pat
