"Fooling WIth Your Heads..."

mdehnersI was reading one of my fav books by one of my fav authors('Raising the Stones' by Sherri Tepper)and I was reminded of what has been happening in Heathenry in the last decade or so. Very complicated book with all sorts of plot-lines all dealing with Ethics and SPirituality. One sub-plot deals with the High Baidee a religion that started out clearly and ended up muddled and complicated. The founder(a character from an earlier book) teaches the Baidee Ancestors a sort of Buddhist/Self-help COmmonsense Spirituality. One of Her pronouncements was when asked about manipulative or deceitful folks. She told them "not to let them fool with your heads". Simple. Clear. Answered the question and subject. Centuries later, High Baidee don't cut their hair or even eat head-shaped foods.
To me, it was about how some Humans can't stand Simplicity and have to muck things up. My old kindred never had a basic Blot because, as our Gydhja said, "it's too Boring". Long, complicated Rituals with plenty of "Sacred Drama" was the norm. A God or Goddess can't just be what has been written or Beleived for centuries, it has to be something new, different and more exciting. A Blot can't be a Blot(or a Sumbel a SUmbel). Maybe that was good enough for Ignorant Savages but I'm a Middleaged Overweight Temp doing entry-level Work. I'm Better than them. I guess I'm Lazy and that's why I'm not what's called a Heathen anymore. I'm Willing to Accept things as they are or are Written unless there is an obvious error in transcription. I'm not Interested in Creating my own Reality. Which means I can't be what is generally called "Heathen" anymore....
