"The Death of Horror"
May. 21st, 2008 02:36 pmI've always been a fan of Horror. I guess the main reason is that, in it's best form it is the Triumph over Incredible Circumstances. It is also, a Morality Play where the "herd" gets "thinned". The Stupid, the Woeful, etc are the ones that don't make it, their own Weaknesses do them in.
Unfortunately, starting in the "80's" a new kind of Horror developed. The Woeful Prospered or at least the Wealful didn't. Often they have Victory snatched from them at the last moment. Chaos became another word for Creative. They're not as satisfying as they used to be. 'Course, I can't blame just Horror. Look at the dreck in SciFi. Part I blame on video games, since they're the source for most folks views on Horror, SciFi and Fantasy. WHat may be useful in a game would NEVER work in a book, yet they'll make a movie like it and wonder why it goes quickly to DVD. There is no need for plot or internal logic in a game. In fact, that can interfere in the purpose, which is to blast things!
I guess I'll keep renting <20 yr movies to have a satisfying viewing experience....
