It's one of my faves and if you can find this Australian author's 20 yr old book, it's worth it. George Turner's 'Drowning Towers' is an odd one, esp. since it was released in the early 80's and pretty much everything in it is coming true.....
It's actually two books in one. The journals of two people a thousand yrs from now and a number of them 50 yrs from...today. The "Present" is a marine archeological dig in what we call Australia of the city of Melbourne. The "Past" is the late 21st Century. The adults of the book are being borne now. The Past journals talk of the End. As the Ocean's rise, resources get tighter and to cut cost gov'ts turn to mechanization which while saves money deletes a tax-payer and consumer...to the point that in Australia 90% are on the Dole, living in great Urb-mons. It'sthe story of the Conways, a "Sweet" family whose father loses his job to mechanization and their Savings and Possessions allow them to live in the Fringe, Poor neighborhoods about the Towers.
Now, this book is WAY before Global Warming or the various Bubbles and downturns.
Very Prophetic....
Cheers,
Pat
