mdehnersSounds silly, doesn't it but functional Polytheistic religions since the Beginning have had to "deal" with those Beings pretending to be their God/desses for Fun or for Foul. They found that the same "tech" that works for Humans works for the God/desses...to a point.
Let's say you were going to meet a Friend of the Family in another town. Let's call him "Bob". Now, your family will tell you about him; Looks, personality, and usually stories about him so you get an Idea who he is(Family "Lore"). You decide your family is being too _____ and basically tune it out. You get there and this guy is paying attention to you. You ask him if he's "Bob" and he says, "sure". You go off with him. Later, as the family finds out about your ravaged corpse they shake their heads because they Knew you thought you Knew more than they did about "Bob"....
Predators are out there, both Spiritual and Physical. The Universe is not a "Warm Puppy"(though the entrails tend to be;>). To paraphrase what an ex-kindred member said,"How do you tell Redbeard from some dead guy named Thor?"....
