Heilsa & Howdy!
May. 29th, 2008 01:29 pmI little intro: I'm Pat, a Gay Heathen on the Florida Panhandle who's been Organically Gardening and Seed Saving since 1973. I live with my Partner on a lot and a half of a pre WWII house that we've been "revitalizing" since 2001. The owners for the previous 20 yrs had basically converted it into a Jeff Foxworthy Set. They'd even taken carpetting that others had thrown out and basically Carpeted the majority of the property...
7 yrs later it is Green and Fruitful, though some of the original fruit trees that made it through the neglectful times can't handle the milder Winters we have nowadays and are dying or dead(though the QUince is still alive, but no fruits...) I test plants for various Heirloom Crop groups and some Hybrids for our conditions and keep those I like. The Nature Spirits as well as the Wildlife like what we've done. In fact, folks during certain times of the yr will drive by to see the clouds of Butterflies that exist in numbers no where else.
I just finished Harvesting the Creole Red Garlics while the Polish Hardnecks will be a couple more weeks. One of the TOmatoe plants I kept in the greenhouse to attempt winter fruits(a failure)has fruits that are just colouring up. The others, all in containers due to our soil nematodes and started this SPring are in bloom. The Taroes, Malangas, Sweet Potatoes, Chayote and Name are all sprouted. The Japanese Temple and Cambodian Giant Eggplants all have blossoms, as do the Japanese Cukes, Indian Summer Squashes(technically a gourd)and the Hot Peppers. I just got back in from planting the Creole Garlic bed with Cuban Hot Peppers...sort of like milder version of Habenaroes...
Hope to get to Know you all!
Cheers,
Pat
