"Good"? "Evil"?
Jun. 27th, 2008 12:11 pm"Causing Unnecessary/Excessive Violence" to Persons, Places or Things....Physically, Mentally and/or Spiritually. That's as close as I can come to a definition of "Evil" other than "You Know it when you See it". It is not a Passive Force. A Place may be Evil because of what it DOES to those who enter it. A Thing may be Evil by what it causes to that and them who are near it. A Person, well...DUH;>!
Unlike a lot of my Pagan friends and some of my Heathen friends, I don't consider that what Modern Westerners consider Evil Alien to what pre-C Folk did...in general. Yes, there are cultural differences and taboo but in general an act that a Modern Westerner considers Evil(at a gut level) would be so to the Ancient.Personally, I think more Survived than many think. Christianity may have "wallpapered" the Western Hof but the form, wiring and plumbing remains. If you don't Beleive me, look in the Bible for most of the SPiritual Beliefs of the average Joe Christian of European descent. Afterlife? Nope. Soul? Nope(I'm one of those that doesn't buy the Legos version of the Heathen soul created by a follower of an Egyptian Chaos God...). Hauntings? SPirits? Monsters? Yah ain't gunna find'm.
Personally, I Beleive that Nurture is a greater affect on Behavior than Nature. I've seen kids from generations of criminals Raised by Good folk BE Good Folk. I've also seen those from generations of Good FOlks grow up to be criminals. And yes, I consider Crime Evil. The reason I use Evil instead of Wrong because Wrong implies that a wrong choice was made. Evil means that the Choice of the action was Intended...
I Worry that we have a couple Generations that have been Raised to Beleive that there is no such thing as Evil. There's no Shame to being Wrong, after all. So you shouldn't feel bad about your Wrong act. Evil OTOH....
Truth,
Pat
