More Botanical stuff!
Jun. 29th, 2008 07:21 amThings keep farting along, even with the drought. Had the 1st tomato of the season, since two others which ripened about the sazme time got munched by possums. 'Furry Yellow Hogg' was a bit of a surprise. Unlike all the yellow tomatoes I'd eaten before, it was firm and tart as opposed to the usual soft and bland. The same went for furry. All the furry-type tomatoes I'd tried before were bland and soft. It'd make a good stuffing tomato as well. It certainly gets points for not being attractive to pests.
Had the 1st of the Thai Golden Melons and wasn't impressed....which is dissapointing. The plants are vigourous and productive. The fruit are even decorative. But the flavour? A bit like a sweet cucumber. I hope it wasn't supposed to be like that, which means it's one of the Asian types used in pickles. I'm givingthe others at the same stage another couple of weeks befoer picking. They'll either rot or taste better...
The Litchii Tomatoes won't be back next yr. While the plants are decorative and the few fruits left by pests are tasty, they can't beat in taste and productivity the Ground Cherries, which require less water.
Thanks to the folks on one of my plant lists I now know how to grow Bananas and Papaya in my area....as Biennials. Start them one yr, store them over WInter and they produce the next. I've ordered some Papaya seeds from the U of H and will order a Agricultural Station hybrid Banana pup next month. I can't see going through the effort for Plaintains, since the Sweet Potatoes and Taros will do just fine for family Starch food sources but dessert? Folks ALWAYS need dessert;>! Of course, Papayas can be used as a fruit and as a veggie depending on when you pick'm...
