High Summer is a time of shifting gears here in the "Dangly Bits". Many veggies are dying from Heat and HUmidity(Tomatoes, Cukes, Melons, etc) and need to be torn out. Sweet Potatoes need last planting(those Ordered from Northern Companies who don't ship until their Temps get over 80F)and (sub)tropicals need propagating for next yr. Fall Seed orders and garden plans need to be made so as to be ordered next month for starting later in August. Pineapple Pears are at their peak but require Cooking so except for a few old folks, Mormons and Survivalist-types, the fruits rot.
Potted up the Sunrise Solo Papaya Seedlings I started in the greenhouse. Next Spring they'll go outside and we'll have fresh Papaya starting in midSummer. I noticed a few more Guavas on the Red Guava I started from seed a few yrs ago. It'll really tick me off if it's an Inferior fruit(you never Know what comes from growing from seed)after all the trouble I've taken the last few yrs. No sense borrowing trouble though. The FHIA23 Banana's doing well. Came with a nice surprise, the leaves are splashed with purple which wasn't mentioned in the literature. Unfortunately, Bananas, Like Papayas have to be grown as Biennnials here. You dig them up and store the plants in a cool dry place overwinter and plant out in SPring. You should have flowers by June-July and fruit before Frost the next yr.
Planning on getting an Atemoya next month. They're a small sub-Tropical tree with fruit like a PawPaw That'll do fine Overwintering in the Greenhouse.
With the cost of Fruits and Veggies nowadays, it's a good investment to put in even something yoiu haveto throw Xmas lights over a couple times a yr to protect against Freeze damage.
Truth,
Pat
