mdehnersA friend's blog triggered some old buttons, though they and the subject really didn't mean to. I've been a weirdie in the alt-rel community, someone who has a disease recognised by Modern Medicine, treated(abet poorly;>) by modern Medicine and their doctors. It's been fastinating that outside of Gay Pagans, somehow having a disease recognised by "The Man" is someway less valid than one diagnosed by some dweeb in a caftan and 60 lbs of ugly Silver jewelry in the back of a healthfood or newage store. A major reason I stopped going to festivals was that while to "opt out" of garbage collection or somesuch I had to bring an MD note, someone who stated that they had _____ that someone out of a free paper they got at the coop "diagnosed" them with was accepted by word of mouth. Once, I'd by, but EVERY YR and at differnt festivals in different states? Heathen events were a little better, simply because everyone was(unless they happened to be in or friend's with the even sponsor...) treated as if there was no excuses. Actaully, I didn't mind having to take an extra Pain pill if it meant "Smurfy Hammerpolisher" had to get off their ample arse too.
In a lot of alt-rel folks they equate Christianity with Modern everything, which is dumb since pretty much everything has been fought BY the Church. Heathens are less likely because, well Western Medicine IS Western and a point of Pride in their Ancestor's Work...at least the Folkish do.
One attitude that always pisses me off is that I'd never tried anything else. If they had a brain, they'd have figured out that someone whose Partner had died of PC pneumonia in 1984 would have NOT had access to Western Meds because there wasn't any. But, that requires using the brain for more than a substrate to grow hair. I've always given my education in Western Herbal Medicine, as well as my training as a nurse and good Peasant stock for me surviving to the time when the ANtiretrovirals came about. They were losing their effects about the time the "cocktails" came up. 'COurse, one of the problems with living longer than the average is that it gives a disease organism time to do things that in a less robust host it wold not. In everything, there is Balance....
