In days of Old Offerings of Human and ANimal Blood were made and so I continue the tradition....abet involuntarilly;>. Generally, here in "The Dangly Bits", the week around Spring Equinox is the best for clearing the land of it's WInter detritus, Pruning, Manuring and Planting. Unfortunately, we have a number of spined, thorned and contact Poisonous Botanicals that even resist the Chemophiliacs. AS I've told Newbies to the area, "Hydrogen Peroxide, Neosporin,Epsom Salts, Vinegar and Baking Soda, bandaids as well as lotion are a must if you plan to Grow anything here. All gloves guarantee is that you'll miss out the warning sting of somthing that will send you to the ER....
Found a Sweet Potato that Boo-Boo dug up but since he was nice enough to bring it to me I have no idea WHAT it is. Well, when it sprouts I'll be able to tell if it's Japanese(leaves like Ivy), Korean(Green leaves like a Philodendron) or a Purple(Purple leaves like the Korean...). The Purple's salvaged from the Possum raids are big enough to start taking Cuttings so hopefully I'll have enough for a row by the end of April.
My local Produce store had a new shipment of Taro; the tubers X3 the size of their previous ones so I've got a number to test in the yard. The few Yucas that survived the Winter should be ready to plant out when the Sweets are. I do love Steamed Yuca!
Too bad it's yr1 for the 'Cara Cara' Orange. It's covered in blooms. Still it's better that a fruiting tree not bear at least it's 1st yr and even better it's 2nd....but I seldom have the patience for that;>!
One nice thing I've noticed as I clear away all the dead matter to the compost heap is that more SUrvived this nasty WInter than I expected to. A lot was passed over by the Frost Thurs. I'm really surprised that most of the Guava lived. Lost all it's leaves but the trunk and main branches have healthy cambrium. Looks like we may have Guavas this Summer!
Cheers,
Pat
